Slowly, softly, with a delicate twist and bob,
The leaves drift down from the branches.
We watch from the window,
Caught in the wonder of the colors, the dance,
The gentle playfulness of their slow descent. //
I wish we could glide through autumn like leaves.
Leisurely, with movements that say, “there’s plenty of time,
No need to rush, no need to scurry,
Simply float.” //
To rest contentedly with the pace the soft wind creates.
But our house moves at a faster clip these days,
The school year has begun,
The calendar fills with birthday parties,
costumed events,
Plans for pumpkins and casseroles and presents. //
Perhaps the swirl of these days,
the inevitable tug towards the rush,
should rest its flurry of activity,
and attempt to mimic the leaves. //
Embracing a gentle descent to the end of the year,
The light reminds us to adjust our rhythms,
To savor the golden hues,
To use our daylight well,
Because soon dusk will fall,
And dark will blanket our homes. //
An invitation to nestle in,
to bring in our harvest,
to relish the bounty of the land,
to share, and laugh, and eat nourishing fare. //
Gathering together in joy, reflecting on another trip around the sun.
Perhaps my longing for a cozy hearthside,
Speaks to a deeper need for a quieter pace.
Like our brother bears lumbering towards warm dens,
I too seek to create a home that’s comfortable and snug,
Welcoming to friends and a solace for my brood. //
Plants and animals,
our family of the earth,
burrow deep in preparation of the cold,
perhaps I too should delve within myself, //
Asking, “how should I rest?
how shall I treasure what this year has wrought?
How should I prepare for the next?
How should I fall?”
This poem did not require as much research as liturgical calendar themes, but I did draw from various sources of inspirations.
